Favourite Humanitarian Ben Affleck's speech at People's Choice Awards will inspire you

In a night that was all about the people's choices, Ben Affleck proved why he won the Favourite Humanitarian Award - with an inspiring speech at this year's People's Choice Awards (PCAs).

The star-studded ceremony was hosted by Allison Janney and Anna Faris.

"To be honest, it's something I have a hard time accepting," he said after accepting the accolade.

He added:

"It's important for me to try my hand at philanthropy because I want to leave behind a record of someone who did more than just gobble up stuff for himself.
I realize a life lived just for yourself is not much of a life."

Close friend Amy Adams gave more reasons to love Affleck.

"The same qualities that make my friend Ben Affleck a phenomenal actor, director and writer are also what make him an extraordinary humanitarian," she said.

"He puts his heart and soul into everything he does."

"He didn't just write a check. He dove in head first, completely immersing himself."

Affleck has helped children receive education and raised millions to give abused victims a voice.

In the comedy categories on Wednesday night, buddy film sequel 22 Jump Street took best comedic movie while veteran Adam Sandler won favorite actor and Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy favorite actress.

“I want to thank the fans that go out and buy movie tickets and allow me to do what I do. Thanks for the job,” McCarthy said.

She added: “Without you I would not have a job and I’m going to stick around as long as you have me.”

Robert Downey Jr. and Jennifer Lawrence emerged the biggest movie star winners, while on the small screen The Big Bang Theory won the coveted top TV show.

Iron Man star Downey Jr. won both favorite movie actor and favorite dramatic movie actor, while Hunger Games actress Lawrence took acting prizes for both general and action films.

On the music front Ed Sheeran was named favorite male artist and Taylor Swift top female artist.

The ceremony kicks off awards season.

The Golden Globes, which also recognise both music and television, are due to be held this Sunday (Jan 11), while Oscar nominations will be announced next Thursday (Jan 15).

The Grammys are due on Feb 8, while the Academy Awards will be held on Feb 22.
