Goodbye Spock: "Long before nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy"

This is how the universe is bidding farewell to Mr Spock: With touching tributes and a dose of hero worship.

Actor Leonard Nimoy - who won a global following as the resolutely logical human-alien first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the “Star Trek” series - died yesterday morning (Feb 27) at his home in Bel Air, Los Angeles.

He was 83.

His wife Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death to New York Times, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Mr. Nimoy announced last year that he had the disease, attributing it to years of smoking, a habit he had given up three decades earlier.

He had been hospitalised earlier in the week.

President Obama reacted to the death by issuing a statement:

Hollywood mourned too.

Celebrities, including co-star William Shatner and Zachary Quinto who inherited the pointy ears in the reboots, took to social media to say goodbye.
