As MTV EMA host, Minaj gets an A for Awkward
Let's agree on this - the size of Nicki Minaj's personality can easily compete with her derriere.
There are no holds barred when it comes to this US rapper-singer, who usually has a strong attitude to boot.
Sadly, her larger-than-life nature went into hiding at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA).
Minaj, 31, was the host at the awards ceremony, which took place yesterday morning (Singapore time) in Glasgow, Scotland.
How did she fare?
Oh, definitely an A - for Absolutely Awkward.
Minaj had joked that she would like to offer someone a "Glasgow kiss", but - unconvincingly "learnt" that it referred to a headbutt.
It sounded like a badly-delivered, poorly-scripted joke.
We also learnt that Minaj is capable of really bad rap lyrics.
To honour the host city, Minaj had rapped about shortbread, whisky and kilt-wearing redheads before launching into a preview of I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by Scottish act The Proclaimers.
If it was a single, it would immediately bomb.
More strange antics included lashing out at a giant "dinosaur" for photobombing a group selfie and a random game of on-stage golf to get a "hole in one".
How apt it was that the hole was in a mock-up of a giant bum, presumably hers.
Luckily for her, she is a far better artist than host.
Minaj swept up the award for Best Hip Hop that night.
She also entertained the audience with a performance of her hits Super Bass,Anaconda and new song Bed of Lies with US singer Skylar Grey.
The night also saw big winners One Direction with three awards, followed by Katy Perry and Ariana Grande, who left with two each.
Minaj's 10 (yes, 10) sexy outfit changes - each more revealing than before - provided entertainment value.
We look at other hits and misses from the show.
HIT - U2'S SPELLBINDING PERFORMANCE
Irish rock band U2 gave a moving performance with Every Breaking Wave that shook the audience.
It was easily one of the best performances during the show.
HIT - ALICIA KEYS' BABY BUMP
She might be heavily pregnant with her second child, but there was no stopping the singer from taking to the stage to We Are Here.
In a figure-hugging silver gown, Keys, 33, looked radiant.
HIT - OZZY OSBOURNE TRIBUTE
Rocker and reality TV star Ozzy Osbourne, 65, was honoured with the Global Icon award.
While his wife, Sharon, cheered wildly from her seat, Ozzy was more subdued when accepting his award.
"I don't know where I got the iconship from, but thank you," he said coolly.
The ceremony ended with a fiery performance of Osbourne's 1980 hit Crazy Train by Guns N' Roses' guitarist Slash, Myles Kennedy and Biffy Clyro's Simon Neil.
MISS - DAVID HASSELHOFF'S CREEPINESS
When presenting the award for Best Female with WWE wrestlers The Bella Twins, the latter had volunteered to protect him from Baywatch fans at the after party.
His reply?
"You got my back? You got my front so to speak," to awkward laughter from the pair.
Thanks, but no thanks.
The repeat telecast of the main show will air tonight at 11pm on MTV Asia (SingTel mio Ch350 or StarHub Ch533).
Rating the red carpet looks
DAVID HASSELHOFF & REDFOO
When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
I can't fault the US singer-record producer and Baywatch star for authenticity - and enthusiasm - in their kilts.
But Redfoo was clearly overly excited.
He was more than happy to hike up his kilt and flash.
Sorry, I did not really want a peek of your tighty-whities.
My eyes!
Hasselhoff also could not resist hamming it up for the cameras, revealing a glimpse of post-Baywatch thighs.
RATING F
KIESZA
Hey, Kiesza, Big Bird called - he wants his party outfit back.
The colours were great and stood out dramatically from the boring sea of blues and blacks.
But this bold, feathered look has a better place elsewhere - tribal party, maybe?
RATING B
ARIANA GRANDE
No cat ears?
No high ponytail?
No bodysuit-and-boots combo?
Finally!
Grande looked polished and elegant in her cleavage-baring black number.
RATING A
EMELI SANDE
Look who brought the dated prom get-up back from the dead.
Usually stylish, the English star's matronly choice this time was rather puzzling.
RATING F
TALLIA STORM
I have a question: Did she brave a storm to arrive at the red carpet?
The Jimmy Neutron hair eclipsed an otherwise great outfit.
The sparkly blazer - yes! Those gorgeous pair of heels - yes!
That hair, though...
RATING C
JOURDAN DUNN
The simple white mini dress gave this English model the extra sass she needed with a daring plunging neckline.
I love that it was sexy, yet far from trashy.
