Petition for Robin Williams character in Legend of Zelda sees more than 100,000 signatures

Fans want Robin Williams to live on forever in the next edition of the Legend of Zelda video game.

Australian Nick Schaedel started a petition on change.org for Williams, who was known to be a fan, to be immortalised as a non-playable character in the Nintendo game.

The petition, which has already seen over 100,000 signatures in the last few days, describes Williams as "an avid player of video games, with a love for all things Nintendo, and a particular love of all things Legend of Zelda".

The comedian died last week in an apparent suicide which resulted in an outpouring of grief and tributes to the Oscar-winning actor.

He had even named his daughter Zelda Rae after the game. The comedian and his daughter had also appeared in a commercial for the game in 2011.

A Nintendo of America spokesman has since responded to the petition that is steadily growing in popularity.

It released a statement that said: "Robin Williams was loved at Nintendo. Our hearts go out to his family and especially to Zelda Williams, who we’ve worked with multiple times. We appreciate the outpouring of support from the gaming community, and hear the request of fans to honor him in a future game. We will not be discussing what might be possible for future games during this difficult time, but we will hold our memories of Robin close.”

Late last week, the makers of World of Warcraft have decided to include Williams as an avatar in the game.
