Pippa Middleton kicks off 4,800km bike ride for charity

Kate Middleton's younger sister Pippa, 30, kicked off a 4,800km bike ride across the US on Saturday (June 14) in San Diego, California, with brother James, 28.

Their mission?

To raise funds for the British Heart Foundation, for which Pippa serves as an ambassador, and the Michael Matthews Foundation, named after the youngest Briton to have reached the summit of Mount Everest, but who unfortunately died on the way down in 1999.

Matthews' brother, also named James, is one of six other cyclists riding with the Middletons in the Race Across America, and they will travel across 12 states from San Diego, California, to Maryland.

"On 14th June, my brother and I, along with six friends will be setting off on a West to East Coast Race Across America (RAAM)," Middleton said in a statement on her fundraising page. "This relay cycling event spans 3,000 miles, 12 states and 88 counties. We are aiming to complete this non-stop challenge in eight days, riding between 350 and 500 miles a day."

After she completes the race, she will be auctioning off her bicycle on eBay, with funds also going to the British Heart Foundation.
