Instagram removes Naomi Campbell's NSFW topless photo

Naomi Campbell is the latest celebrity to have had a topless photo removed by Instagram.

The 45-year-old supermodel caused a stir when she posted the photo — captioned with the hashtag #FreeTheNipple — on the social media platform as a teaser for her upcoming book project, reports Harper's Bazaar.

It is also previewed in this month's edition of contemporary magazine Garage.

Despite its provocativeness, the image had received positive responses.

According to New York Magazine, the NSFW image managed to stay on Instagram for 20 hours before being removed.

The #FreeTheNipple campaign was started in hopes "to decriminalize female nudity" and "to challenge censorship and public nudity laws".

However, that violates Instagram's terms of use which state: "You may not post violent, nude, partially nude, discriminatory, unlawful, infringing, hateful, pornographic or sexually suggestive photos or other content via the Service."

However, the photo and reposts by others are still up on Campbell's Twitter, which allows "graphic content" in tweeted images but prohibits them as avatars, headers or background images.

Campbell isn't the first celebrity to show her support for the campaign or to try and taunt Instagram's content policy.

Last year, the campaign gained media attention when celebrities Miley Cyrus and Rihanna also shared their topless images on Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag.

Chrissy Teigen this year has challenged the photo-sharing app after a shot she posted from W Magazine was banned.

The 29-year-old then responded by putting the picture through various filters to see if they would pass.

They did not and were also taken down.

Teigen's reasoning was that there were double standards as pictures of topless men go through uncensored. She said at the time: "If the boys can do it, why can't I?"

Then in June she posted an Austin Powers-like shot where she was clearly topless but with objects deliberately placed to obscure her nipples.

At the time she tweeted: "The nipple has been temporarily silenced but she will be back, oh yes, she will be back."
