Pandas at M'sia zoo put on diet
The giant pandas from China who are currently at the Zoo Negara in Kuala Lumpur were put on a diet, because they'd been piling on the pounds.
The zoo's deputy director of hospital and veterinarian services Dr Mat Naim Ramli told The Malay Mail Online that the pandas had exceeded their ideal weight after just six months.
Xing Xing, the male panda, weighed 118kg last July, while female panda Liang Liang weighed 98kg.
Xing Xing's weight had spiked to 138kg while Liang Liang's went up to 116kg.
They were put on a diet in November.
Ideal weight
According to Dr Mat Naim, the ideal weight for male pandas is below 135kg, while the ideal weight for female pandas is below 115kg.
Said Dr Mat Naim: "It (the weight gain) is nothing unusual and their weight is now normal. There is nothing to be alarmed about."
“The pandas were then put on a ‘diet’ where their food intake was controlled to bring their weight down to an optimum level.
“Xing Xing and Liang Liang currently weigh 132kg and 110kg respectively."
