Indonesian channel accused of plagiarising You Who Came From the Stars
Indonesia's RCTI accused by Korean TV station of stealing the plot of hot drama You Who Came From the Stars.
Indonesia's version of "My Love from the Star" was not a remake, but simply plagiarism of the original, according to a content representative for the South Korean television network the Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) .
"It's not a drama that was made with full rights," the rep said, in an official statement released to Korean media.
"It can be considered plagiarism."
The Indonesian television network Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia (RCTI) first aired their new drama "Kau Yang Berasal Dari Bintang" on Monday, to massive ratings.
But according to numerous Chinese news outlets, the show featured an almost identical setting and storyline as the original drama.
According to the SBS rep's statement, the network had been negotiating the rights to "My Love from the Star," (also sometimes translated as "You Who Came From The Stars") with a different Indonesian television network, but apparently RCTI execs hoped to beat their competitor to the punch.
"We were currently in the process of negotiating full rights with another company in Indonesia when their remake of the drama came out," the SBS content rep added. "We're currently preparing our response."
"My Love from the Star" is about an alien who came to earth 400 years ago, who falls in love with a top Hallyu star.
The drama, which aired on SBS from May to February and starred Jun Ji Hyun and Kim Soo Hyun, has become a sensation, particularly across the Asian nations.
