Ash & Elm: A place to meat
Buffet restaurant Olive Tree at InterContinental Singapore is gone, replaced by the darker and sexier Ash & Elm. The hotel is undergoing renovations in phases, and Ash & Elm is one of the first projects to be completed.
The new restaurant is glossy, sleek and dramatic, with three "theatre areas" where diners can see chefs preparing and cooking their meals. This includes a wood fire oven for their flatbreads and carbs.
It serves a semi-buffet for lunch but it's a la carte at night.
It's all about meat here: Beef aged in-house, French chickens, Spanish pork.
You're encouraged to share your food, which adds to the sexiness, and there are lots of long tables, making it excellent for gatherings.
MUST TRY
The Beef Tasting ($108) is a great introduction to the restaurant. The meats are grilled using Manuka wood chips from New Zealand. The flavourful Bavette d'Aloyau (or flap steak) is a must-try.
SUBTLE SWEETNESS
I love the corn-fed Yellow Chicken Supreme ($29) for its subtle sweetness that complements the polenta. And the bacon and mushroom sauce is heavenly.
POPULAR
It's no surprise that the Seafood Linguini ($31) is popular. This has an almost creamy crustacean sauce, which makes it worth the calories.
WONDERFUL COMBO
The Pumpkin and Bacon flat bread ($18) is a wonderful combination of sweet, salty and crispy. It's a must-order.
DESSERT TIME
Make room for desserts because there is a lot to try. My favourite is the Yuzu-Citrus Combination ($14), especially the bright yuzu sorbet.
