Give yourself a hearty treat at OverEasy

OverEasy courted some controversy in July when it was setting up its Orchard Road outlet.

Its frontage was too risqué for some, leading to complaints, which ironically raised the visibility of this American cafe.

Now, it’s playing nice by giving out free lemonade to shoppers who turn up there with shopping bags and accompanying receipts from any shop along Orchard Road.

Both acts are showy, but I think OverEasy never needed it. The food here — a few items are exclusive and not found at the One Fullerton outlet — is basic but competent.

This is a fun place with great (loud) music, lovely service and a menu of hearty offerings.

While there has been so much said about the retail gloom on Orchard Road, OverEasy’s arrival is a step in the right direction.

FLAVOURFUL MAC & CHEESE

The Mac and Cheese selection here is wonderful. The Mac & Cheek ($22) is flavourful, creamy but not cloying, but the true star is the Roasted Vegetable ($14) version with a peppery undertone.

SMOKEY SHAKE

Since I gave up smoking, I respond favourably to anything smoked, and this Smokey Bear milkshake ($9) is just that, with bananas and house-smoked maple syrup.

When I returned unannounced, I found it less smokey and more sweet though.

IRRESISTIBLE SPROUTS

I couldn't stop eating the crispy Brussels sprouts ($12). It's ugly, slightly bitter and cheesy, but very addictive.

HEARTY PASTRAMI

If you're hungry, the Reuben Pastrami Sandwich ($18) is a hearty choice. It's not too salty and the bread is crispy.

SKIP THE SALAD

When the Broccoli & Avocado Salad ($16) arrived, the beauty of the plate overwhelmed me. Unfortunately, the taste didn't. This dish is pedestrian at best.
