School of frock: Slum Season
Welcome to the obligatory week of the month where Hollywood slums it on the red carpet and nothing is setting my world on fire
TONI COLLETTE
Krampus premiere in Los Angeles
Dress: Dion Lee
Variations of this teal design with laser-cut net-like overlay have been spotted on Cara Delevingne and Michelle Dockery, but I'm still not sick of it. The colour really suits Collette and her one-shoulder version is the most feminine and formal one so far, with the structural neckline giving it a boost.

GWYNETH PALTROW
Goop Mrkt grand opening event in New York City
Dress: Valentino x Goop
Has she been raiding her 11-year-old daughter Apple's wardrobe? Paltrow is too old for this Wonder Woman-inspired eagle-and-star-embellished babydoll shtick. But one can't deny she's got the body for it and it's cute and festive with all the tulle and sparkles, so she gets a pass this time.

RACHEL MCADAMS
Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York City
Jumpsuit: Noam Hanoch
Shoes: Christian Louboutin
Aren't strapless bras supposed to be worn underneath your top and not over it? The fashion police really ought to clamp down on this underwear-outerwear rebellion pronto.

SELENA GOMEZ
KIIS FM's iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in Los Angeles
Dress: Camilla and Marc
Shoes: Casadei
What is this Elvira-Morticia Addams nonsense? Gomez, you ain't no goth girl, and no amount of black fabric, black hair extensions and black eyeliner will make me believe otherwise. Abort mission, please.

ADRIANA LIMA
Madame Tussauds wax likeness reveal event in New York City
Jacket and shorts: Rachel Zoe
Boots: Gianvito Rossi
Lima is lucky her waxwork is such a dud - and a welcome distraction from her dreadful ensemble. It's proof that Victoria's Secret Angels look better with their clothes off.

MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL
Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York City
Top and pants: The Row
Oh dear. This is the sartorial equivalent of having veggies stuck in your teeth and nobody telling you about it until everyone else has seen it. Hey lady, you forgot to button your shirt before going out. Oops, too late.

WHO WORE IT BETTER?
LIZZY CAPLAN VS EMMA ROBERTS
The Night Before premiere in Los Angeles, Nov 18
Donate A Photo holiday kick-off in New York City, Nov 24
I'm not fond of both white Thakoon frocks with black leaf embroidery and the way the starlets style it. But let's just say I hate Roberts' simple pleated design less than I hate Caplan's overdesigned bodice. Still, I will never get how black pantyhose goes with a light-coloured dress.
Did bare legs go out of style overnight?
MOST IMPROVED
MILEY CYRUS
ONE Campaign and (RED)'s 10th anniversary celebration in New York City, Dec 1
Top and pants: Christian Cowan-Sanluis
A Very Murray Christmas premiere in New York City, Dec 2
Dress and shoes: Prada
Yes, your eyes aren't deceiving you, it's Miley Cyrus - wearing actual clothes. I've practically forgotten what she looks like in them. But tossing aside her raunchiness and casual nudity on occasion doesn't guarantee an automatic win. The stiff pink glitter suit is one big "HUH?!". The only people who should be allowed to go near it are Liberace impersonators. But I'm really digging the Harajuku girl-meets-white Christmas embellished dress - yes, even the ridiculous Minnie Mouse buns and knee-high socks. It's the prettiest she has looked in a long while.
SPECIAL MAN-TION
JACKSON WANG
Mnet Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong
Suit: Not known
K-pop boy banders are indistinguishable to me, so much so I needed a colleague's help to identify this particular member of GOT7. Apparently Wang is the most popular one, which explains why he's oozing so much swag, even in a traditional three-piece suit. Consider me a convert.
“It’s my job to look nice and wear a good dress, right? No one cares about a boy in a suit; they’re like, ‘he’s hot,’ that’s it, done. It’s all about dresses.”
