School of frock: Slumming Season
Now that the dust has settled after months of fashion finery, Hollywood stars are taking a break from glamming up.
JENNIFER LOPEZ (B+)
TONY AWARDS, NEW YORK CITY, US
Gown: Valentino
What? No spray tan? No belly button? No booty? Still, it wouldn't be Jenny from the Block if we didn't get an eyeful of boobs. Frankly, the pure novelty factor of seeing her in a non-sheer, non-figure-hugging and non-super-short ball gown in this lovely shade of blue easily propels her to the top of a slow week.
JENNA DEWAN-TATUM (C+)
CMT MUSIC AWARDS IN TENNESSEE, US
Dress: Zuhair Murad
The visible white lining underneath this purple slip dress with see-through lace panels is killing me. If she's concerned about flashing her crotch in public, nude undies would at least have been less of an eyesore.
CARRIE UNDERWOOD (C+)
CMT MUSIC AWARDS
Dress: Thomas Wylde
Clutch: Deepa Gurnani
Shoes: Jimmy Choo
Now we know who's been borrowing - and abusing - JLo's spray tan. Sure, Underwood's body is fantastic for someone who just popped three months ago. But the white embellished mini, frosty nude make-up and fringed shag are giving me 90s flashbacks. It's all looking a little trailer trash.
NICOLE KIDMAN (C)
CMT MUSIC AWARDS
TOP, PANTS AND SHOES: BALENCIAGA
Her desperate desire to have more kids is no secret. So it's a bit creepy that she's trying to look pregnant in this unattractive strapless fur-trimmed peplum top when she's not.
BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD (D)
JURASSIC WORLD PREMIERE IN LOS ANGELES, US
Gown: Emilio Pucci
Howard, if your intention was to strike fear in our hearts with the severity of the styling and by showing off a full belly after consuming a baby dinosaur co-star, then all right, we surrender.
ANNE HATHAWAY (F)
THE PUBLIC THEATER'S ANNUAL GALA IN NEW YORK CITY, US
Dress: Not known
Unless she sleepwalked to this event or was caught in a downpour, such negligence is unacceptable. Wash your hair, put on some lipstick and something other than a nightgown and sandals, and then maybe I'll give you another chance.
WHO WORE IT BETTER?
Elizabeth Banks vs Naomie Harris
ELIZABETH BANKS
PITCH PERFECT 2 PHOTOCALL IN BERLIN, GERMANY, APRIL 29
NAOMIE HARRIS
ENTOURAGE PREMIERE IN LONDON, UK, JUNE 9
You'd think Banks, who plays stylist extraordinaire Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games movies, would easily slay all red carpet competition, especially someone else wearing a similar tortured and overdesigned outfit as this asymmetrical, multicoloured Peter Pilotto number.
But she meets her match in Bond girl Harris, who schools Banks in the elegance department and whose silver Christian Louboutin pumps trump Banks' terrible Jimmy Choo mules.
MOST IMPROVED
BROADWAY.COM AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARDS IN NEW YORK CITY, US, MAY 19
Blazer: ASOS
Jumpsuit: AQ/AQ
Bag: Chloe
TONY AWARDS IN NEW YORK CITY, US, JUNE 7
Gown: Naeem Khan
VANESSA HUDGENS
If Hudgens, with her spotty track record, can effect such a dramatic turnaround, there's hope for us all. What a difference a month makes, with the sloppy, oversized white ensemble making way for such a pretty, romantic floral organza halter gown. Bravo to her personal best - ever. Better late than never.
HONOURABLE MAN-TION
JUSTIN BIEBER
CALVIN KLEIN JEANS MUSIC EVENT IN HONG KONG
Outfit: Calvin Klein Jeans
I never thought I'd ever say it, but the Biebs is quite the hottie in this casual, cool get-up. Grooming really goes a long way.
I think it’s a hoot that, at my age, people are calling me a fashion icon. I’m best when I’m wearing something structured, with no frills or bows. Something that will show my waist and bum — because I’ve always had a good bum.
