Game of Thrones may run for 8 seasons, HBO hints at prequel

All good TV shows must end, Game Of Thrones included.

But the hit HBO series still has three seasons worth of story to tell before it wraps up.

Since premiering in 2011, Game Of Thrones has smashed TV ratings records — including its own. During its fourth season, it ousted The Sopranos to become HBO's most-watched TV series.

The conclusion of its fifth season in June meant that the show had finally run out of source material to adapt.

The series is based on author George R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire books and he is currently writing the sixth book.

Game of Thrones' producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will now determine when and how the show will end.

HBO president Michael Lombardo said at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour on Thursday (July 30) that he is confident that the critically-acclaimed series will run for at least three more seasons.

“That’s (season seven) definitely open. I think seven seasons and out has never been the conversation. The question is how much beyond the seventh season are we going to do. At this point, obviously we're shooting (season) six now, hopefully discussing (season) seven. I think they’re feeling like there’s probably two more years after six," Lombardo said.

And like fans of the show, Lombardo does not want it to end anytime soon.

"As I've said before, I would always love for them to change their minds,” but regarding eight seasons, “I think that's what we’re looking at right now.”

Lombardo also hinted at a possible return to the land of Westeros after Game of Thrones concludes, possibly for a prequel

"I would be open to anything Dan (Weiss) and David (Benioff) want to do. It really would depend fully on what they want to do," he said.

"There's enormous storytelling to be mined in a prequel."
