Here's your first look at Melissa Benoist as Supergirl

Forget teasers, CBS has given us a six-minute long first look at its new Supergirl television series.

The network released the clip via its official YouTube channel on Wednesday (May 13), just a week after it picked up the series.

As you'd expect, Supergirl's tone is much more similar to that of CW's The Flash, also produced by Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, than Man of Steel (2013).

It promises to be a fun and lighthearted show that even non comic book fans can appreciate.

Supergirl may not hit CBS till November, but we already have plenty of reason to look forward to it after our first look at the Girl of Steel in action.

Here's why you should be excited about the Kryptonian's return to television screens.

1. Melissa Benoist

The 26-year-old's most prominent role was as Glee Club member Marley Rose in the fourth and fifth seasons of Glee so her casting as Superman's cousin had people scratching their heads.

It seemed more logical to go with Laura Vandervoot, who played the character in Smallville, or The Vampire Diaries' Claire Holt at that time.

While searching for a lead actress, CBS president Nina Tassler said the network was on the lookout for someone with "quality" and "charisma".

Benoist displays both in the video, playing the quirky and bubbly Kara Zor-El (the heroine's real name).

But unlike the most recent incarnation of Superman in Man of Steel, Kara's not bothered about how people would feel if they knew who she really was.

Uncle Jonathan Kent certainly wouldn't approve of it.

It's refreshing to see a heroine who just wants to show off her powers.

Isn't that what most of us would do if we had powers?

2. Awesome Powers

Having the same Kryptonian heritage as the world's most famous superhero means you get the same set of powers as him.

Bullets can't pierce Supergirl's skin.

She has enough strength to carry planes.

Now where have we seen that before? Oh yes...

She can stop an oncoming truck just by standing in front of it.

And she can take down armed men without breaking a sweat.

3. Great Supporting Cast

Benoist will be joined by several notable actors in Supergirl.

Mrs Harrison Ford, Calista Flockhart, has signed on to play Kara's sassy boss Cat Grant.

Her response to why Supergirl shouldn't be called Superwoman instead?

"I'm a girl and your boss and powerful and hot and rich and smart."

Remind people never to cross her.

Also on board are Desperate Housewives actor Mehcad Brooks as former Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen and Homeland's David Harewood as Henk Henshaw, the leader of the Department of Extra-Nomal Operations (DEO).

Oh don't forget the original Supergirl Helen Slater will make an appearance although it is unclear who she'll be playing.
