Sean Penn and Charlize Theron break up?

It seems Hollywood stars Sean Penn and Charlize Theron have called it quits after a year and a half of dating, reports Us Weekly, citing an inside source.

The pair, who have been friends for about two decades, first got together in 2013.

The break-up comes six months after rumours circulated about the pair getting engaged in Paris.

The source said that it was Theron, 39, who called it off after she was recently in France with Penn, 54, for the Cannes Film Festival.

Vanity Fair and E! Online reported that Penn, who used to be married to Madonna and then actress Robin Wright, had told Esquire UK in March that he was ready for his third marriage, which he would consider as his first.

"You say I've been married twice before, but I’ve been married under circumstances where I was less informed than I am today.

"So I wouldn’t even consider it a third marriage, I’d consider it a first marriage on its own terms if I got married again."

He also said of Theron:

"I’m self-proclaimed bad at mathematics but I can do two plus two.

"53 years old plus finally beginning to figure out why you haven’t been happy in a single relationship? It could seem too late. But to run into somebody now who you care about is a much more passionate, deeper, truer and – God! – a much happier feeling.

"It’s a lot more romantic and a lot more fulfilling to be in a relationship and to think you’re a good person within it."

Theron, who has a three-year-old adopted son Jackson, gave an interview to Vogue last year and had hinted that she may not be the marrying kind.

"And watching other people getting married? I think it's beautiful for them, but to be quite honest, usually I'm sitting there just devastated.

“It's supposed to be this night of celebrating love, and all you see is a couple separated all night making sure everybody else is O.K. It just looks like a lot of work.

"And as you get older, you start sifting through the stuff that really matters."
