Tom Cruise to star in Top Gun 2?, Latest Movies News - The New Paper

Tom Cruise to star in Top Gun 2?

In the late 80s, posters of Tom Cruise's Maverick character in Top Gun graced the walls of many besotted fans.

Already a star thanks to Risky Business (1983), Cruise was catapulted to even greater heights after playing a renegade fighter pilot in Top Gun.

The good news?

News reports suggest that Cruise, now 52, will likely be reprising his role in the movie's sequel, Top Gun 2.

In 2012, it was reported that Cruise had scouted for locations for Top Gun 2 with the original film's director Tony Scott.

However, Scott died in August of that same year.

Top Gun fans' hope for the sequel was revived last week

Movie producer David Ellison talked about Top Gun 2 at a press event on Friday (June 26) for his latest movie Terminator: Genisys, tellingly declaring "there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick".

Ellison, whose company Skydance will be co-producing Top Gun 2, said: "Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now.

"He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy have turned into today.

"It (the movie) is I don't think what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon.

"But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak."

Marks has written over 20 movie screenplays which includes Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li (2009) and Rewind (2013).

A new story

Ellison also added that Top Gun 2 will be exploring the end of the era of dog-fighting - the aerial battle between fighter planes - and fighter pilots.

Top Gun 2 is slated to focus on more current aspects of piloting culture, which include drones and fifth generation fighters.

"Justin has a phenomenal take on updating the world on what fighter pilots in the Navy have turned into today," said Ellison.

Last year, co-producer Jerry Bruckheimer said that the movie will be showcasing more advanced military aircraft.

"The concept is, basically, that the pilots are obsolete because of drones.

"Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay."

Cruise himself has not commented on the degree of his involvement in Top Gun 2.
