Movie Review: Florence Foster Jenkins (PG)
The thought of someone who can't hold a tune becoming a famous opera singer is nuts.
And Florence Foster Jenkins is the stranger-than-fiction true story of how one woman defied all odds to do just that.
Of course, it helps that she's filthy rich. That said, the titular heroine (a terrific Meryl Streep) is no spoilt socialite.
She has such a big heart and is a genuinely nice person.
Streep plays Jenkins so well, you will become instantly captivated like many of her loyal fans.
This biopic wisely chooses to focus on her relationship with her longtime companion St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant).
Jenkins' singing may be horrendously off-key, but together Grant and Streep hit all the right notes and deliver a harmonious and often hilarious performance.
Verdict: 3/5
