Movie Review: Wild City (NC16)
Hong Kong director Ringo Lam has helmed a string of hit films, including Prison On Fire (1987) and Maximum Risk (1996).
But he has lost his magic touch. His new action flick Wild City is stylish and exciting but is let down by an overly imaginative storyline that doesn't gel with its urban setting.
When bar owner T-man (Louis Koo) and his cabby half-brother Chung (Shawn Yue) befriend Yun (Tong Liya), a woman on the run, they find themselves targeted by her rich, unscrupulous ex-beau and the triad members he employs.
While the movie boasts visceral fight scenes, the storyline is so unbelievable, it's hard to connect with the characters.
