Star Wars: 7 theories on Episode 7
There are only seven days to go before we are hit with the biggest movie event of the year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
With no proper synopsis provided other than the fact that the story is set 30 years after the events in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return Of The Jedi (1983), it is natural that rumours and theories are going around like wildfire, especially since Star Wars fans are known to have fertile imaginations.
Keeping the production shrouded in secrecy has also fuelled feverish chatter of what one can expect in the seventh instalment of the space saga.
While some rumours have been debunked by producer Kathleen Kennedy at the recent Star Wars: The Force Awakens US press conference, here are the seven crazy fan theories that our TNP infographics journalists KELVIN CHAN, BILLY KER and ELRAD CHOY think may be on the money.
KYLO REN (Adam Driver)
Is he actually Luke Skywalker, who has succumbed to the dark side? It would explain why Skywalker is not in any of the trailers or movie posters. We know from the trailers that Ren worships Darth Vader, so another plausible theory is that Ren is Emperor Palpatine's (Ian McDiarmid) grandson.
FINN (John Boyega)
Is he the son of the Millennium Falcon's former owner, Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams)? Another sort of logical — if blinkered — theory is that since there are not many black people in the Star Wars universe, Finn could be the grandson of Jedi Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson). Proof that for a franchise full of imagination, its fans can be pretty unimaginative.
SUPREME LEADER SNOKE (Andy Serkis)
He's the mysterious big baddie of this new series, but nothing much has been revealed about his character. Is he the new Emperor or someone worse? Many believe he is Darth Plagueis, Palpatine's master, who taught him how to raise people from the dead and was murdered by Palpatine. It wouldn't be a stretch to theorise that Plagueis survived the ordeal and, with the fall of the Emperor, rose back to power with the New Order.
LUKE SKYWALKER (Mark Hamill)
Luke is in self-imposed exile. Being the last Jedi alive, he needs to hide from the baddies because if he is destroyed, the followers of the Dark Side will finally get to rule the galactic universe. It is also said that his lost lightsaber is a major key plot point.
REY (Daisy Ridley)
She is the heroine with the mysterious identity. Perhaps she is even the offspring of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) - she wields the same blaster gun as Solo. Some fans also say that Rey and Kylo Ren are twins, and that she may be turned to the dark side, paving the way for Gugu Mbatha-Raw to take over as the female lead in Rian Johnson's Episode VIII.
HAN SOLO (Harrison Ford)
Will he die at the hands of Skywalker? Another camp says Solo is killed by Ren. Ford famously begged Star Wars creator George Lucas to kill his character off during the original trilogy, but was told to stick around to complete his arc with Princess Leia, so he may get his wish this time.
DARTH VADER
An icon of the Star Wars mythology, he returns from the dead. The charred remains of Vader's helmet signifies that his force is still strong.
