The couple have been married for 13 years and have three children - Kingston,9, six-year-old Zuma and Apollo, aged one.

The pair said in a statement:

"While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment. To that end, we respectfully request privacy from the media during this time."

According to court documents obtained by E! News, the reason for the split is irreconcilable differences.

She is also asking for joint custody of the couple's three sons.

They first met in 1995 when Stefani, as the lead singer of No Doubt, opened for Bush.

Rossdale said that he threw a party just to hang out with her and they had their first kiss that very night.

Stefani and Rossdale join other couples like Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert as well as Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck who have split ways this year.

And fans aren't taking it too well - with most airing their grief on social networking sites like Twitter.

Some were... shocked.

Is there hope for us mere mortals now that they have broken up? No, say some users.
