Whitney Houston is coming to a city near you ... as a hologram

It's official - Whitney Houston will return to the stage next year to do a world tour.

Well, technically, it's a hologram of Whitney Houston.

The news was announced by company Hologram USA, whose CEO Alki David said in a statement that he was "heartbroken when Whitney passed away in 2012", reported E! Online.

"The opportunity to share her spectacular gifts with the world again is exactly what I hoped for when I built the hologram business. I'm confident we'll create the ultimate celebration of Whitney's amazing artistry," said David.

The company will be working with Houston's sister Pat, who is also president of the late singer's estate.

Pat Houston said in a statement: "It's a great opportunity for her fans to see a reinvention of one the most celebrated female artists in history and to continue a legacy of performances that will not be forgotten in years to come."

The show will feature Houston's greatest hits and also yet-to-be-announced special guests.

The content created by FilmOn Studios will also be distributed online and on TV.

Houston is not the first celebrity to get the hologram treatment after death.

In 2012, rapper Tupac Shakur "performed" with Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre at the Coachella music festival, causing waves and inciting debate about whether "resurrecting" dead celebrities via hologram was appropriate.

But others have taken to the stage long after their passing.

Michael Jackson

The King of Pop, who died in 2009, returned to the stage at the Billboard Music Awards in 2014. His hologram performed Slave To The Rhythm, off his posthumous album Xscape, alongside both real and CGI dancers.

Elvis Presley

In 2007, American Idol brought back Elvis Presley to sing a duet with Celine Dion.
