Some 38,000 litres of crude oil spilled onto the streets Thursday after a pipeline ruptured in a Los Angeles neighbourhood, officials said.
The oil was “knee deep” in some areas and spread over an 800m area in Atwater Village, northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
A geyser of crude oil spurted up to 6.1m in the air after the rupture in the 50cm pipe, which is above ground in an industrial area.
Two women were taken to hospital.
“Oil is knee high in some areas. A handful of commercial businesses are affected,” officials said.
