Indonesia's search and rescue teams have detected pings of the black box possibly belonging to AirAsia QZ8501, said Santoso Sayogo, an investigator at the National Transportation Safety Committee.

Indonesian search teams had found the tail section of the ill-fated flight on Wednesday, briefly raising hopes that the black box could be located in the tail.

However, Sayogo said that it has become apparent that the black box was no longer in the tail.

Divers are currently confirming the position of the black box.

AirAsia Flight QZ8501 was flying from Indonesia's second-biggest city of Surabaya to Singapore when it vanished from radar screens on Dec 28.

There were 162 people on board.
