After evading headlines for more than a year, former teen star Amanda Bynes is at it again.

The 28-year-old troubled star was arrested over the weekend on a misdemeanour charge of driving under the influence of drugs in Los Angeles.

The California Highway Patrol did not say what drugs Bynes was suspected of using. But they added that Bynes was arrested "based on the observed driving and her evaluation."

Bynes, who had her own Nickelodeon show when she was just 13, was in her Mercedes-Benz sport-utility vehicle when she was stopped in the middle of an intersection in Los Angeles.

According to the arrest report, Bynes appeared dishevelled at the time of the traffic stop.

The actress was released from jail on Sunday after posting US$15,000 (S$19,112) bail.

Frequent legal troubles

Bynes was first arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in 2012 and was placed on three years probation.

Following a series of subsequent legal troubles that included driving-related arrests, she was placed in psychiatric care in 2013 after she set a smal fire in her parent's neighbour's driveway.

She also seeked treatment at a rehab facility and was released after six months in December last year.

It was reported that she had been making great improvements to her life and even enrolled at the Los Angeles Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.
