Feeling woolly-headed yet? Hungry sheep gobble up $8k worth of narcotics

This article is more than 12 months old

A flock of sheep enjoyed an expensive - and illegal - lunch in England.

Their chow of choice? Cannabis plants worth thousands of pounds.

The marijuana, which had been packed into seven bags, had been dumped on the edge of a field on Fanny's Farm in Merstham, Surrey on Sept 28.

Shop manager Nellie Budd called the police on discovering her flock's narcotic meal.

She told Surrey Mirror newspaper last week: "At first I thought it was someone's hedgerow rubbish. I went down to get the bags so the sheep weren't eating black plastic.

"When I got there, I realised it was a form of herbal cannabis plant. They were very strong in scent."

Street value

A police drug squad that arrived on the scene to remove the stash for incineration that the plants had a street value of around £4,000 (about $8,200).

While the thought of stoned sheep might sound amusing, it seems like the herbivores were rather hardy animals.

They didn't seem to be affected by their unusual menu item.

Mrs Budd said: "My sheep weren't quite on their backs with legs in the air but they probably had the munchies.

"They haven't had any other side effects but I'll tell you about the meat next week."
