Gaza teen tells the horrors of war through tweets

This article is more than 12 months old

How is it like to live in a war zone? Let a 16-year-old tell you.

Farah Baker, who lives in the heart of Gaza near the Al-Shifa Hospital, has been documenting the terrifying moments in her life in her war-torn neighbourhood.

Bloodshed in Gaza surged on Tuesday with dozens more Palestinians killed as the conflict raged into a fourth week.

More than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict so far, while the death toll on the Israeli side hit 56 on Tuesday.

Hamas has been keeping up a steady barrage of rocket fire on cities in central Israel. In return, Israel has been carrying out a punishing aerial offensive on Gaza, killing many civilians.

Farah, who has a six-year-old sister, talks about living without electricity and having to stay indoors most of time.

Her tweets have struck a chord with people around the world, with many sending her messages of support.

But it seems unlikely the conflict will end any time soon, with both sides being unable to reach a compromise.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday it would be “a lengthy campaign” that would not end before troops destroyed cross-border tunnels used for staging attacks on southern Israel.

“Israeli citizens cannot live with the threat from rockets and from death tunnels – death from above and from below,” he said.

Israel has also denied any involvement in the bombing of some civilian buildings.

"We have not fired on the hospital or on Shati refugee camp,” Major Arye Shalicar told AFP.

“We know that Hamas was firing from both areas and the missiles struck these places,” he said, adding that 200 missiles fired at Israel had fallen short and landed inside Gaza in the past three weeks.
