No one knows why the man suddenly attacked a group of police officers.

No one knows what his intention was.

But the bloody mess that the attacker - whom New York City Police Department (NYPD) identified as Zale Thompson - left behind was clear.

The group was posing for a photograph on the streets of Queens, New York, yesterday when Thomson suddenly charged at them that afternoon.

A police spokesman said Thomson had swung the hatchet and struck one officer in the right arm, he then swung it again and struck a second officer in the head.

The remaining two officers fired their weapons at the man, hitting him.

According to CNN, Thompson died after being shot by the very same police officers he attacked.

CNN reported that Thompson had a criminal past and had been discharged from the Navy.

The brutal attack left one officer in critical condition. He is currently undergoing surgery after being hit in the head.

A 29-year-old female bystander was struck by a stray bullet. She underwent surgery and was recovering at the hospital, the spokesman said.
