LTA calls tender for next generation ERP system
Electronic road pricing (ERP) gantries may vanish from our roads in 2020. But don't pop the champagne just yet, motorists will still have to pay to use certain roads.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) called a tender on Wednesday to develop Singapore’s next generation ERP system.
The new system will be based on Global Navigation Satellite System technology.
It said in a press release: "This new system will overcome the constraints of physical gantries, which are costly and take up land space.
"In addition, it is not practical to continue with the current gantry system, which is almost two decades old and will become increasingly expensive and difficult to maintain."
Based on distance
The new system will allow for distance-based pricing along congested roads, meaning that motorists will be charged based on the distance travelled on these roads.
The on-board units in vehicles will also be changed. The new interactive and intelligent device will give real-time traffic information at the location and allow for electronic payment for parking fees. (Goodbye, paper coupons.)
LTA is also considering allowing off-peak users to "pay only for using their vehicles for short periods rather than the whole day, or for using them only on uncongested roads".
Technology feasible
The new technology was found to be feasible after a 18-month System Evaluation Test, which concluded in December 2012, said LTA.
Three consortia have been shortlisted to participate in the upcoming tender - NCS & MHI Engine System Asia, ST Electronics (Info-Comm Systems), and Watchdata Technologies & Beijing Watchdata System.
The contract to design and develop the system is expected to be awarded in the second half of next year.
LTA aims to implement the system from around 2020.
