North Korean leader causes stir with new look

This article is more than 12 months old

It is common to sport a fashionable new haircut for the festive period.

Even the leader of North Korea has a new "do" - one that is attracting quite a bit of attention.

Kim Jong Un recently debuted a gravity-defying style.

And it's not just the North Korean dictator's hair that's going through a change.

His eyebrows appear to be smaller too.

While his current style is not a drastic changes from his previous look - maintaining the tight-at-the-sides, long-on-top look - it does look like it requires a lot more product.

The famous centre-parting replaced with a slick wave.

Kim Jong Un's hair has been the focus of fascination for some time.

In March last year, a hoax went viral claiming that all men in North Korea were to get the same hairstyle as their leader.

One month later, a hairdresser in UK caused a minor diplomatic incident when he used a poster of Kim Jong Un with the title "Bad Hair Day?", to advertise his shop.

But the new look comes with a determination.

At a meeting of Workers' Party of Korea Central Committee on Wednesday, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said that he announced that officials should  "wage an all-party intensive campaign against abuse of power, bureaucratism, irregularities and corruption".

But in other parts of the world, the concentration has been on comparing the hair. Similarities include Will Smith, UK reality TV star Joey Essex and a trapezoid.
