Miss Piggy officially dumps Kermit The Frog after almost 50 years of couplehood

This article is more than 12 months old

Another power couple bites the dust and this time, they're not exactly human.

Forget Charlize Theron and Sean Penn, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, or even Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards.

Miss Piggy's break-up with Kermit The Frog is in the spotlight for bringing out the funny side of netizens.

Netizen SheDefiesGravity wrote a comment on an online article about the split: "How many times did Miss Piggy want to get married and Kermit hopped away somewhere?

"Good for you Miss Piggy, you're entirely too good for his frog legs anyway!"

Another netizen, Anonymous16405, posted: "You know, they should never have been together.

"Perhaps I'm old-fashioned, but I feel a pig should be with pigs and frogs should be with frogs."

In statements that appear on both characters' Facebook pages, the ex-es said that from now on they will be "seeing other people, pigs, frogs...".

This uncoupling has been construed by some as a publicity stunt for The Muppets' new sitcom that premieres next month.

The Guardian reported that the show will follow the much-loved characters behind the scenes of Miss Piggy’s new late-night show.

Kermit is said to be playing the executive producer on Miss Piggy's show, which will feature guests such as Reese Witherspoon.

Apparently it was Miss Piggy who initiated the split.

TIME reported that the statement said: "After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, we have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship.

"We will continue to work together on television (The Muppets/Tuesdays 8pm this fall on ABC) and in all media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, throughout the universe.

"However, our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter. Thank you for your understanding.”

Kermit, meanwhile, revealed that he's now seeing another pig in ABC's marketing department.

"It’s a day-by-day, moment-by-moment process,” Kermit said. “Piggy and I have gone our separate ways romantically."

Disney's The Muppets is a collection of puppet characters that was created by Jim Henson in the 1950s.

According to US Weekly, Miss Piggy gave her thoughts on the split at the recent press conference that she attended for the upcoming The Muppets sitcom.

She said: "It's good publicity. I'm glad we're broken up,

"This is going to be great for moi's stardom."

She said: "I have no problem working with my ex, okay?

"Dating moi is like flying close to the sun.

"It was inevitable that Kermit would drop down to the ground while I stayed in the heavens."
