Phew! Canadian couple relieved after getting back lost $50 million lottery ticket
First, they were over the moon. Then came the agony which lasted almost six months.
The Canadian couple were finally able to smile when they got back something they had lost - a winning lottery ticket worth C$50 million (S$57 million).
Mr Hakeem Nosiru and his wife Abiola’s emotional roller coaster ride began in January when they hit the jackpot, Mail Online reported.
A day after winning the lottery, they lost the ticket. They couldn’t sleep because they had let millions of dollars slip through their hands.
Mrs Nosiru told Toronto Sun: “I couldn’t sleep for days, I couldn’t eat. I was devastated.”
Mr Nosiru had given the ticket to his wife to keep in her purse. Sometime after they went to church the next day it disappeared.
Frantic search
A frantic search began at home. Every place was searched including garbage bins.
But that despair turned to joy after a fellow member of the congregation found the ticket and returned it back to them in April.
Luckily for the couple, Mr Nosiru had signed on the back of the ticket.
Checks by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming, which took months, ensured that there was no criminality in the case.
Relieved
And on Monday, the couple finally had their millions.
They have yet to decide how to reward the woman who returned the ticket.
Said Mrs Nosiru: “We believed that before the money there was a life. After the money there would be a life.”
