Who's on top? And who's a flop? Our headmistress of haute couture JEANMARIE TAN grades the best- and worst-dressed celebrities of the week

PASS

EMMA STONE

Premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in Berlin

Top and skirt: Chanel

Shoes: Christian Louboutin

All right, boo all you want. This is probably my most controversial A-grade so far, but I'm going to go out on a limb to say this is a big win. The US actress is steadily putting the "amazing" in the sequel's ongoing promo tour. How dreamy she looks in this gold-fringed sleeveless multi-coloured top paired with matching floaty blue skirt and the perfect heels, hairstyle and makeup.

ANGELABABY

Hong Kong Film Awards in Hong Kong

Gown: Zuhair Murad

Go big or go home, right? Pretty girls wearing princess ballgowns always get me, and Chinese model-actress Angelababy is hands down one of the prettiest faces in the business right now. For literally going very, very big with this peach embroidered confection, she easily secures her title as belle of the ball.

DISTINCTION

VICTORIA JUSTICE MTV MOVIE AWARDS IN LOS ANGELES

Dress: Atelier Versace

Clutch: Edie Parker

Shoes: Brian Atwood

The Nickelodeon babe's got game whenever she puts on a flirty Versace frock - and the tinier, the better. This futuristic lilac swirl-patterned embellished single-strap minidress is one such stunner.

SHAILENE WOODLEY

MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles

Top, skirt and shoes: Balmain

Olive green plus knotted/pleated leather plus chunky gladiator sandals equals "edgy" overkill. But fortunately for the US actress, the result is more badass than bad.

KAT GRAHAM

GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles

Top and skirt: Sebastian Gunawan

Shoes: Brian Atwood

The contrast between the boxy capelet-like printed crop top and matching pencil skirt in terms of shape and colour is wonderful. But mostly, I like how modern, chic and impactful this ensemble is - especially for the US starlet, whose default personal style veers towards skanky.

CARINA LAU

Hong Kong Film Awards in Hong Kong

Gown: Ralph & Russo

Shoes: Christian Louboutin

The Hong Kong actress has so far been on a roll with the brand's extravagant creations, but this get-up appears to be suffering from a gender identity crisis. I appreciate how Lau takes risks, but she's just not the right woman for sheer embellished trousers - which is a pity because the ice-blue chiffon criss-cross halter top and matching train is lovely.

LUPITA NYONG'O

MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles

Dress: Chanel

Shoes: Casadei

We've already established during awards season that the Oscar-winning Kenyan actress and breakout style star of 2014 can rock any colour of the rainbow. But when she's wearing them all at the same time, on a kooky dress made out of a zillion Skittles? It's somehow not as cute on her as I'd hoped. Also, someone call pest control because the poor girl's got a rodent glued onto her head.

RIHANNA

MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles

Dress: Ulyana Sergeenko

Shoes: Manolo Blahnik

Rihanna has come to the point in her career where she's literally sleepwalking to events - she basically woke up in her nightie, rolled out of bed and onto the red carpet. I know the Barbadian pop star has more or less given up on actual clothes, but the worst thing about her latest public display of underwear is that it's such a snooze.

FAIL

IGGY AZALEA

MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles

Dress and shoes: John Galliano

The Australian rapper is known for bringing the shock value, but this short-sleeved blush number featuring laser-cut perforations and bejewelled embellishments is just shocking in its ugliness.

And what on earth are those torture devices strapped onto her feet? No wonder she looks like she's having a massive backache.
