This article is more than 12 months old

He had only been in Singapore for a month.

Sadly, the Bangladeshi worker died on the job after he and a colleague were trapped when an underground structure caved in yesterday (Sept 19) night.

Mr Rathul, 23, and two of his colleagues were inspecting some structures about five metres underground at Sunview Way off Pioneer Road when 200kg of concrete structure collapsed around them.

Lianhe Wanbao reported that Mr Rathul and Mr Wahed, 29, were trapped for an hour as their colleagues frantically scrambled to rescue them.

Even though the two men were rushed to hospital, Mr Rathul later died from his injuries.

Mr Wahed survived and is being treated for his injuries.

Mr Rathul's cousin Omor, 20, told Wanbao:

"Construction had only begun for less than a week and I had no idea something like this would happen.

"My cousin had also only just started work barely a month ago."

According to Mr Omor, Mr Rathul was the sole breadwinner. He has been supporting his sick father, his housewife mother and two younger siblings – an eight-year-old brother and 14-year-old sister.

Mr Rathul's body was sent back to Bangladesh today.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
