GE2015: MPs state their intentions, new faces introduced
Members of Parliament and new faces were out shaking hands with residents across the island on Sunday morning (July 26).
After the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee released its report on Friday, ministers, MPs and opposition members stated their intentions for the coming general election.
Here's a round-up of the Sunday action:
Workers' Party to contest in new SMCs
The Workers' Party (WP) said on Sunday it will contest in five GRCs and five SMCs.
In addition to the constituencies they already hold - Aljunied GRC, Hougang SMC and Punggol East SMC - they plan to contest in East Coast GRC, Jalan Besar GRC, Nee Soon Grc, Marine Parade GRC, Fengshan SMC, MacPherson SMC and Sengkang West SMC.
"As a matter of principle, The Workers' Party will contest where we have contested before," WP secretary general Mr Low Thia Kiang told reporters at a walkabout in Punggol East.
"In this case, Joo Chiat is being redrawn into Marine Parade. We don't want to disappoint voters in Joo Chiat. We want to offer them a choice again in this election."
Tin Pei Ling wants to continue in MacPherson
MacPherson, previously part of Marine Parade GRC, has been carved out into its own SMC.
Its MP, Miss Tin Pei Ling, has expressed her desire to continue to serve her residents.
She is, as she has said on Facebook, "about to pop" anytime now, but told The New Paper on Friday that she would like to stand again, if she is fielded.
She reiterated this to residents in the area when she went on a walkabout with Social and Family Development Minister Tan Chuan-Jin in the area on Sunday morning.
SDP 'returns home' to Bukit Batok
Dr Chee Soon Juan and members of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) visited Bukit Batok for a walkabout on Sunday morning.
Dr Chee stated the party's intention to contest in the newly-formed Bukit Batok SMC, which was carved out of Jurong GRC in the electoral boundaries report released on Friday.
"This is our coming home. We've been here before ... it only makes sense for us to come in, historically," he said in a video interview with The Online Citizen.
He noted the area's geographic proximity to the Holland-Bukit Timah, Bukit Timah and Yuhua constituencies, all constituencies in which SDP had contested in the 2011 General Election.
In Tampines, members from the National Solidarity Party and the Singaporeans First party were out meeting residents, reported The Straits Times.
New faces
The Straits Times reported that a few potential candidates were also spotted at events on Sunday.
In Sembawang, Mr Ong Ye Kung, director of group strategy at Keppel Corporation, and corporate lawyer Amrin Amin joined Sembawang GRC MPs in a charity walk to honour Singapore's first president, Mr Yusof Ishak.
Mr Darryl David, a former TV personality and currently the deputy director of Temasek Polytechnic's School of Design, and Mr Koh Poh Koon, a colorectal surgeon, spoke to residents at a Hari Raya celebration at Ang Mo Kio GRC.
Over in Tanjong Pagar, potential candidate Ms Joan Pereira (above, right), a former public servant, was introduced at a walkabout.
Ms Pereira, 47, was formerly the director of Family Life and Active Ageing at the People's Association. She is now assistant general manager at Temasek Cares, the charity arm of Temasek Holdings.
