Our Blocks Rock party draws crowd

Drawn by the aroma of food, the crowd was out in full force - there were queues snaking outside the tent that was buzzing with activities.

It was the third round of the Our Blocks Rock parties. This time, it was held at the hardcourt next to Yew Tee MRT station yesterday.

The stalls served a variety of items, ranging from street food to desserts and exotic beverages.

Some of them were setting up their booths and eagerly anticipating the crowd hours before the event started at 4pm.

One stall that had a constant stream of customers was the Sotong Brothers, which sold deep-fried squid caked in batter and sprinkled with seasoning.

Owner Hefmee Khan, 34, told The New Paper on Sunday: "This crowd is crazy. I did not expect the overwhelming support, and we are doing much better than expected."

The Sotong Brothers has been around for five months, and Mr Khan said this has been one of the best responses so far.

Another stall operator who was pleasantly surprised by the crowd was undergraduate Chloe Quek.

The 21-year-old, who is studying at the National University of Singapore,set up a stall called Midnight Baker selling baked goods.

When we spoke to her at 4pm, Miss Quek said: "It is great that so many people are receptive to my stuff.

"I was not sure about setting up a stall here because I have never done it at a heartland event before."

Student Nurashikin Ishak, 22, who was manning Togok by Zb, which sold multi-coloured fruit drinks, said the warm weather persuaded many customers to flock to her stall.

This edition of the Our Blocks Rock parties had a host of activities too.

They included a balloon sculpting station, a performance by magician Jonathan Ng and a station for the event-goers to learn life-saving skills.

A nearby resident, engineer Anthony Chan, 32, was happily munching on fried squid.

He said: "The food is damn shiok. Hopefully more of such events can happen in the future."

The party continues this evening.
