Singaporean woman among injured in Taiwan water park blaze

There is a Singaporean among those who were injured in Saturday night's blaze at a Taiwanese water park.

The Singapore Trade Office in Taipei confirmed the news today (June 28).

Here is the press statement:

Lianhe Zaobao reported that the Singaporean is a 21-year-old woman.

Surnamed Loy, she is in intensive care after suffering 40 to 50 per cent burns on her body.

Around 1,000 revelers were attending the Colour Play Asia concert at Formosa Fun Coast Water Park when a fire ignited from coloured powder that had been sprayed on the crowd.

Horrifying amateur video footage showed crowds of young revellers dancing in front of a stage and cheering. 

But their joy turned to terror when the powder suddenly erupted into flames, engulfing them in an inferno as they ran screaming for their lives.

Some were dressed only in swimwear and images from the scene show many with severe burns being tended by those who escaped.

One male student who sustained minor injuries described the scene as “hell”.

AFP quoted him saying: 

“There was blood everywhere, including in the pool where lots of the injured were soaking themselves for relief from the pain.”

Taiwanese media reports said 516 people were injured in the blaze with 410 warded in hospital — 194 were seriously injured.

Aside from the Singaporean, two of the injured came from China and another four were from Hong Kong.
