Singaporeans 'thank' Indonesia for clean air but...

This article is more than 12 months old

Singaporeans, are you tired of suffering unhealthy air as the haze continues?

Instead of blaming the air quality on neighbouring Indonesia, someone has decided to “thank” the country.

How? Via the website thankyouindoforthecleanair.com.

People have been sharing the link and also the hashtag #terimakasihindonesia as haze conditions worsen.

It is unknown when the thank-you site was created but it came into existence this year, The Rakyat Post reported.

This was based on Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla having rapped neighbouring countries for grumbling about the haze

In March this year, Mr Jusuf was quoted as saying:

“For 11 months they enjoyed nice air from Indonesia and they never thanked us.”

As of today (Oct 4), netizens have shown their "gratitude" more than 3.6 million times.

Those who feel more grateful can also write personalised thank you notes and many of the comments were dedicated to Mr Jusuf, who was nicknamed Juju.

“Thank you so much. Now you can give us another month of clean air too since you are so nice,” posted Meh123.

One user named N95 Mask Producer “thanked” Jusuf for increasing their business:

“Our deepest and heartfelt thanks to Indonesia.

"For 11 months we have no business — now we earn enough to cover costs for the whole of next year. Kind of like the Bak Kwa trade."

Bak kwa is a barbequed meat product that is popular during Chinese New Year, when its price would skyrocket.

But website mustsharenews.com revealed that the site is actually an advertisement, which directs users who click on the banner to the Amazon page for N95 masks.
