A Singaporean man climbing a mountain in India has died after suffering from altitude sickness.

The man, who was part of a Singaporean group climbing Stok Kangri in the western Himalayas, reportedly had to be carried down to base camp last Wednesday.

Stok Kangri, which is about 6,150m high, is popular with rookie mountaineers as it is a "non-technical" climb, which does not require professional climbing skills.

Local guide Suraj Rai, who was not with the dead man's team, said the victim's oxygen level was dangerously low when he was taken to base camp.

The man was then taken to a hospital in the city of Leh, in India's Ladakh region, AsiaOne reported.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: "Officers from the Singapore High Commission in New Delhi have been in contact with the next-of-kin to provide consular assistance, including facilitating the repatriation of the deceased back to Singapore."
