They were queueing up to buy food about 10m away from a bus stop in front of People's Park Complex when they suddenly heard a woman scream.

Mrs Suzie Singh, a 40-year-old lawyer who was with her husband, initially thought somebody was playing a prank.

But when the couple went to the bus stop at Eu Tong Sen Street, they realised that a woman had been hurt in an accident involving a bus.

"We saw a woman lying at the side of the road," Mrs Singh said, recounting the incident that happened on Tuesday around 6pm.

"She was bleeding from her face and the right side of her body."

The New Paper understands that the woman fell down at the bus stop and had hit her head against a bus.

The couple told TNP that traffic was heavy at that time, and there were many people at the bus stop.

Her husband, 47, who wanted to be known only as Mr Singh, added that the people who had helped - about five of them - "were fantastic".

"These random people automatically helped. Two directed buses away from where the woman fell, and one put an ice pack on the woman's head. The rest made sure nobody came too close to the injured woman," he said.

Mrs Singh said the helpers did the right thing by not moving the injured woman.

The ambulance arrived shortly, and by that time, the injured woman was conscious and had managed to sit up on her own, said Mrs Singh.

SCREAM

Another witness, Madam Lim, 70, said she had just alighted from a bus when she heard a woman scream.

"When I turned to look, I saw a woman lying on the road," said Madam Lim, who works part-time in the food and beverage industry.

"I felt very sorry for the lady and wanted to stop and help, but I couldn't because I was rushing for work," said Madam Lim, who called The New Paper hotline.

Police said this was not classified as a road traffic accident.

When the TNP team arrived at the scene at about 7pm, the bus was still there, about 15m away from where the victim was injured.

It was driven away at about 7.30pm.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted to the incident at 6.18pm.

A woman in her 40s was taken to Singapore General Hospital after sustaining head injuries.
