3 cool things to try out at Sitex IT show
This year's Sitex show promises cool experiences and hot IT bargains
The Sitex IT show is usually the place to snap up the best IT bargains.
But besides getting your hands on the latest gadgets, you can also immerse yourself in cool new experiences at the fair this year.
The 28th edition of the annual consumer technology fair, held at the Singapore Expo Halls 5 and 6, started yesterday and ends on Sunday.
It is open from 11am to 9pm and admission is free.
Here are three things to check out:
3D SELFIE BOOTH
If you are looking for a Christmas present for yourself, how about a detailed and lifelike sculpture of your likeness?
Visit the booth set up by 3Arts Concept under Pixel Labs of the Info-communications Media Development Authority of Singapore at the Tech Zone.
It takes just five minutes on a revolving platform to scan your entire body. Printing your 3D selfie in sandstone takes about four hours, depending on the size.
A full-body 3D selfie - measuring about 25cm - costs about $600. A sculpture of your upper body costs about $40, depending on the size.
VR ESCAPE ROOM
This escape room may look like mere blocks placed on the ground that you have to walk on.
But as soon as you put on the VR headset, you will be transported to a platform where you have to avoid falling into an endless shaft while dodging swinging obstacles and lasers. It is akin to a scene from a sci-fi movie.
This virtual reality escape room, set up by Reality+ in collaboration with Alienware at the Gaming Arena zone, has seven levels of difficulty.
It is realistic enough that those with a fear of heights - such as this reporter - will find it hair-raising.
HOME OF THE FUTURE
You can also peek into a home of the future, where everything such as doors, lights, air-conditioning and the coffee machine is automated.
Head over to the Smart Home & Appliances zone and join a guided tour of a fully-furnished mock-up apartment. It is presented by Homeation and powered by Fibaro, a company that specialises in smart-home technology.
There, you can unlock the main door or draw the blinds using a mobile phone. You can also adjust the lights and air-conditioning to the time of the day and your preference.
There is even a panic button that sounds an alarm in an emergency.
Sitex 2016: Gadgets to look out for
CURVE XTREME 200
An action camera designed to capture every detail of your adventures, the Curve Xtreme 200 can capture 4K videos at 25 frames per second (fps), and full high-definition (HD) videos at 60fps.
It has a 2-inch display that allows you to see exactly what you are shooting, while its 170-degree wide-angle lens enables you to capture action from a first-person perspective.
The Xtreme 200 has a waterproof casing that lets you take it underwater to a maximum depth of 30m.
It can be found at booth 6D33 in Hall 6, alongside Marbella products such as the Pilot S Navigator (above), which allows you to monitor your tyre pressure and temperature; the KR5, a full HD Wifi-enabled dashcam that supports 24 hours recording; and the LX1, another full HD dashcam that uses a 3-megapixel 140-degree wide-angle lens.
ASUS ZENBOOK 3
The razor-thin laptop, which was released earlier this year, weighs under 1kg, making it a suitable companion for busy professionals who work while on the move.
The ZenBook 3 is available from $1,998 at ASUS booths.
It comes bundled with a year's anti-virus (worth $59), a sleeve case (worth $49), as well as a mini dock that consists of a USB Type-C 3.1 port, a HDMI port and a USB 3.0 port (worth $129).
NIKON D5500
The Nikon D5500 is an upper entry-level DSLR camera that sits just above the entry-level D3300.
It weighs only 420g, thanks to its monocoque structure that is strengthened with carbon-fibre-composite material.
It has a 3.2-inch touchscreen that can flip 180 degrees for selfies.
It comes with a dual lens kit (18-55mm and 55-200mm) and retails at $1,249 - with free gifts such as a tripod, a camera bag, 32GB SD cards, and Harvey Norman vouchers - at booth 6D07.
