Four injured in Woodlands junction collision
A man and his front seat passenger were trapped in a car after it collided with a van at a Woodlands junction yesterday afternoon.
The car, a silver Toyota, ended up crashing into and dislodging a traffic light pole. The driver of the van lost control of his vehicle after the crash and rammed into a metal sign post at the Senja Way and Woodlands Road junction.
The elderly male car driver was eventually helped out by passers-by, while his passenger had to be extricated by rescuers after the 1pm crash.
Madam Zaitoh, 50, who lives in a nearby HDB block, said she had heard two loud bangs from the road while cooking lunch and went out to her corridor to see what had happened.
The housewife told The New Paper: "I saw a woman going into the back seat of the car. It looked like she was helping the driver to get out of the car."
She said the driver managed to get out only when another group of passers-by helped him.
TRAPPED
Madam Zaitoh said the female passenger was trapped as the front passenger side door and window were jammed shut.
"As she was injured, she couldn't leave through the driver's side," she said.
Mr Theva Thurairaju, 62, a field manager at a law firm, was on his way to his daughter's home at a nearby block when he passed the scene of the accident, after which he called the TNP hotline.
A man who identified himself as the brother-in-law of the van driver told TNP: "I got a call and I was in shock, I rushed over immediately.
"But by the time I got there, they (the vehicles' occupants) had already been sent to the hospital."
The police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were alerted to the incident at about 1.20pm. SCDF officers used hydraulic rescue tools to free the front passenger in the Toyota.
SCDF said that four people were sent conscious to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.
The woman is suspected to have spinal injuries.
Police investigations are ongoing.
