Jail, fine for pump supervisor who cheated company of $103,000
A concrete pump supervisor was today jailed 24 months and fined $30,000 for cheating and loan sharking activities.
Liang Lip Chieng, 49, cheated G & W Ready-Mix of nearly $103,000 over a period of two years.
He had earlier been slapped with 407 charges.
He pleaded guilty to 65 counts of cheating and one count of acting as a loanshark runner.
Another 341 charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.
The court heard that Liang supervised a team of concrete pump operators in a Sungei Kadut company.
The workers were paid based on the amount of concrete pumped, and Liang was in charge of consolidating the claim forms workers filled up.
He inflated the numbers on these forms without informing the workers.
Liang would then retrieve the money from the workers saying that they had been paid extra.
As all the workers are foreign nationals, they did not dare to question Liang or raise the issue to the company.
Liang spent the money either on gambling or paying his gambling debts.
