Man jailed 36 months for attacking mum
He was so upset with the noise his mother was making with her walking frame that he viciously attacked her.
He assaulted her, threatened to kill her and even threw hot water on her.
It all began when Rajesh Pannu, 31, was watching television in the living room of the family's Tampines flat on the morning of Nov 19 last year.
Angered by the noise, he grabbed and threw his mother's walking frame.
But the nightmare was only beginning for Madam Narindar Kaur Darshan Singh, 62.
His attack left her with injuries and a 33-day stay in hospital.
Yesterday, Rajesh, who suffers from chronic schizophrenia, was sentenced to 36 months' jail.
PSYCHIATRIC HISTORY
Rajesh was spared caning as District Judge Matthew Joseph said ordinary incarceration and punishment "may not be right" for Rajesh, who has a psychiatric history dating back to 2002.
The situation turned bad for Madam Narindar when she threatened to call Rajesh's uncle for help.
He threw her mobile phone to the floor and unplugged the home phone.
Rajesh attacked her on the sofa by slapping and punching her face and body a few times.
He broke a broomstick while hitting her on the head, leg and body.
In pain and bleeding from the nose, Madam Narindar walked to her bedroom.
Seeing his mother walking without the use of the frame infuriated him more.
He struck her forehead multiple times with a plastic mug as she lay in bed and screamed in pain.
He then grabbed a knife.
Rajesh said "I want to kill you!" and slashed Madam Narindar's right forearm twice.
He later poured two pots of hot water on her.
Rajesh called for the ambulance when he discovered that his mother had collapsed in the toilet at about noon.
Among Madam Narindar's many injuries were a fractured little finger on the left hand, burns to 26.5 per cent of her body and lacerations to her right forearm.
Defence lawyer Sunil Sudheesan was thankful for the consideration given to his client and hoped there would be post-incarceration treatment to deal with Rajesh's mental condition.
