Man sentenced to 12 years' jail and 18 strokes for rape, robbery and theft
A male cleaner was convicted this morning (Aug 24) of raping and robbing a woman, and stealing a T-shirt.
Riduan Rantau, 48, was sentenced to a total of 12 years' jail and 18 strokes of the cane.
On Oct 13, 2014 at about 8pm, Riduan had ambushed his victim, a 34-year-old woman, in an HDB estate near Queenstown.
He later dragged her to a multi-storey carpark staircase where he robbed and raped her.
Fortunately, a witness, who had just parked his car, heard the woman's screams for help.
He alerted the police, who had managed to locate Riduan in the vicinity.
Unfortunately, he was released as there was then insufficient basis to arrest him.
The next morning at about 6am (on Oct 14, 2014), Riduan stole a T-Shirt left to dry at a common corridor at another nearby estate in Queenstown.
Riduan was arrested a few hours later that morning.
