Singapore is Asia's least corrupt
Singapore is ranked among the 10 least-corrupt countries in the world, according to Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index 2015 (TICPI) released yesterday.
It is the least corrupt in Asia and eighth of 168 countries globally.
Singapore's score of 85, one point higher than in 2014, is almost twice both the global and Asia-Pacific regional average of 43.
Countries are scored on a scale of zero for highly corrupt to 100 for very clean.
But the Republic's ranking fell from seventh in 2014. Among Asia-Pacific nations, only New Zealand was ranked higher than Singapore. It was the fourth highest in the world with a score of 88.
GLOBAL STANDINGS
Denmark (91), Finland (90) and Sweden (89) were rated as the least corrupt countries globally while North Korea and Somalia tied for the lowest place with just eight points.
Two-thirds of the countries on the 2015 index scored below 50.
"Singapore continues to be one of the least corrupt countries in the world and the Republic's public sector remains as one of the cleanest," said a Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) statement yesterday.
"This is testament to Singapore's continued vigilance, commitment and zero-tolerance approach in our fight against corruption.
"The TICPI 2015 results also attests that corruption in Singapore remains under control, with the number of corruption complaints and cases registered for investigations by the CPIB at 30-year lows."
