Youth convicted of robbing cross-dresser and foreign worker
A 17-year-old who robbed a cross-dresser and a foreign worker with his friends was sent to reformative training on Thursday (Feb 18).
Alson Chew Guozhi had earlier pleaded guilty to one count of theft and one count of robbery.
Chew and two friends, Daryl Ng, 16, and Keith Tan, 17, robbed their first victim, a 28-year-old Indian national, in Geylang on Nov 10, 2015.
Chew then struck again in Geylang later that month, with a different accomplice, Benjamin Tan, 20, when he snatched the handbag of a man who was dressed like a woman.
Chew and his three friends, who have their cases pending, made off with a total of about $2,400 worth of cash and valuables.
Both times, Chew struck after having lost money while gambling in Geylang.
The court also heard Chew was on 18 months' probation — having been convicted of unlawful assembly earlier in 2015 — at the time of his offences.
