A Swiss passenger train has derailed due to a landslide in the Tiefencastel municipality in the country’s east, police told local media.

The police described it as “serious”.

First images from the scene show two carriages perilously hanging in woodland.

The derailment happened in the Graubuenden region near Tiefencastel, in the east of the country, Switzerland’s ATS news agency reported.

The train was travelling from Chur to St.Moritz and is operated by the Rhaetain railway company.

A police spokesman, Mr Daniel Zinsli, said the incident occurred at about 1pm local time (7pm, Singapore time) and said it was difficult to get to the area by road.

Four helicopters are at the scene, while the fire brigade, police and ambulance crews are trying to get there.
