Tail section of AirAsia QZ8501 plane found, says Indonesia's search chief
The tail of the AirAsia QZ8501 plane that crashed has been found in the Java Sea, Indonesian search chief Bambang Soelistyo said today.
The chief of Basarnas, Indonesia's search and rescue agency said:
"We have successfully obtained part of the plane that has been our target.
"The tail portion has been confirmed found."
The discovery on the seabed is significant because the tail of a plane usually houses the "black box" flight data recorders, which is crucial to determine the cause of a crash.
Meanwhile, recovery operations are still underway despite bad weather conditions.
Less than a third of the bodies have been recovered. There were 162 people on board the ill-fated flight.
