Teen, 18, arrested for setting off sparkler blasts

This article is more than 12 months old

A teenager is to be charged today with causing a public nuisance by setting off an improvised explosive device made of sparklers.

The 18-year-old was arrested with three others, aged 12 to 14, after an incident on July 30.

Police had found the bundled sparklers in the vicinity of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 after getting a call for assistance around 10.30pm that day.

Since July, there have been 17 cases of people setting off explosive devices made of sparklers, the police said yesterday.

A total of 72 people have been arrested in connection with these cases.

If the 18-year-old is found guilty, he faces a fine of up to $1,000. Investigations against the other boys are still continuing.

Such explosive devices are a fire hazard, cause noise pollution and may alarm the public, the police said.

"We take a serious view of these offences," said the police in a statement.
