Three accidents, three riders dead
In a tragic spate of accidents, three riders died within a span of 24 hours.
In the latest of the accidents, a 35-year-old shipyard worker died after his bicycle collided with a lorry carrying bread company Gardenia's logo.
The accident happened along Woodlands Avenue 10 towards Admiralty Road West at about 7am yesterday, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The cyclist was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.
Site supervisor Andy Tan called The New Paper's hotline after driving by.
He says: "I slowed down when I saw the accident. The driver was pacing back and forth, looking like he was in a daze.
"The bicycle was badly mangled, forming the shape of a number eight on the ground."
The rider lay motionless on the road, he said.
"I knew he was gone. I still can't get the look of his face out of my mind," says Mr Tan.
The impact also sent the rider's backpack and shoes flying, landing some distance from his body, reported Shin Min Daily News.
The victim's supervisor contacted the victim's brother after finding out about the accident, the Chinese evening daily reported.
Accidents happen frequently around the area, where throngs of foreign workers often ride their bicycles to work, added Mr Tan.
This accident followed two other fatal crashes, which happened on Friday morning. Both involved men riding motorcycles.
A 31-year-old man, a father of a six-month-old daughter, died after an accident on the Central Expressway, near the Braddell exit.
SCDF said they were notified of the accident which involved a van, bike, and lorry at about noon.
The rider was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he fell into a coma before dying.
Another accident happened earlier that day at 5.40am, along Clementi Avenue 1, near the National University of Singapore. A 21-year-old motorcyclist lost control of his bike and crashed into three trees. He was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.
